Many of Connecticut's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving Connecticut's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We handle every aspect of wildlife control. We are fully equipped to work on any project, large or small. Some of our services include:

  • Humane wildlife trapping and relocaton services
  • Removal of raccoons or squirrels from the attic
  • Building repairs and prevention work to keep animals out
  • 100% permanent elimination of rats, mice, or even bats
  • Cleanup of animal waste and odor control services
  • Emergency animal issues, and dead animal removal

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Hartford county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. There is no free Burlington animal control for wildlife issues.

About Beaver: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior

Beavers are rodents that largely live in North America. They have earned a reputation for cutting logs of wood which they then transport into a water body where they are used to build a dam. Here is a brief look at beaver appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat and diet as well as behavior.

Appearance

There are two types of beavers: the north American variety and the Eurasian variety. Beavers rank number two in terms of rodent size and they are good swimmers that are able to carry logs and wood pieces across big distances by swimming through streams and rivers. Beavers are bigger than one would expect and they can grow to more than one meter in length. Their tails give them away. These tails are broad and flat and are responsible for helping the beaver swim the waters with ease. Beavers can weigh up to sixty pounds and their feet are webbed and flat.

Biology

Beavers are known to mate for life and when one dies, the remaining beavers will start looking for a new mate immediately. Mating starts when the beaver is just three years old. The mating season begins in the months between January and March as well as from November to December. When they mate depends on the region in which the beavers are living. Gestation period lasts for 3 months and the newborn is able to open its eyes immediately after birth. Within 24 hours of birth, the newborn starts swimming.

Life cycle

Newborn beavers will be weaned away from their parents at the age of just 2 weeks. Their parents take good care of the newborn beaver and some typical beaver lives for up to 20 years. Beavers live in groups and each colony (as the group is known as) has one female and a breeding male who take care of their offspring. Beavers are territorial and will protect their lodges against other beavers. Their colonies are marked with mud piles and their scent. Beavers become sexually mature by the age of 3 years.

Habitat

Beavers normally make their homes near small sized lakes and marshes as well as ponds. They also live in streams as well as in rivers. They are able to build a lodge with mud and sticks and these lodges are mostly made near an island or pond bank as well as on the shores of a lake. Beaver dams have a dome shape and can be of a size of more than 10 feet in height.

Diet

Beavers mostly survive on tree bark as well as cambium, which is the soft tissue found under the tree's bark. Old bark is something that beavers relish and they also feed on vegetables such as buds and roots as well as water plants. These vegetables aid in the digestion of the tree barks the beavers eat.

Behavior

Beavers like to live in colonies which are comprised of a single female, the breeding male as well as the offspring. Beavers behave in a manner that is both good and bad for our environment. By building dams, they develop wetlands in which different species can survive. However, these dams are also responsible for flooding in low lying areas.
