Barrie Wildlife Removal Tip: Homemade Woodpecker Repellent & Spray Deterrent
Woodpeckers may be an interesting bird and fascinating to watch, but these birds are loud and can cause extensive damage to the house and anything wooden. They cannot hang around the yard and homeowners need to get rid of them from invading the whole exterior. But at the same time, you should not try anything that could harm woodpeckers like sticky substances that can kill them and the environment. Repellent/deterrent made at stores could be costly and full of chemicals. Here are some homemade repellents that are safe and effective in ridding the drumming birds.

One idea is to fill up a small spray bottle with water and Tabasco sauce, specifically. Why Tabasco? That spice is really a taste woodpeckers hate, more than regular hot sauce. Spray the area where they are pecking away and causing damage. When the woodpecker comes back to peck it, they will immediately get away, completely repelled and repulsed by the scent. Another form of deterrent is to take a pine cone and cover all of it in melted cheese with sprinkled cayenne pepper on top; it has the same effect like Tabasco sauce. Place the pine cone where the woodpeckersare and one taste of this will scare them off as well. One thing woodpeckers like sweet things like fruit. As a reverse repellent, plant berries in distant areas where the woodpecker will spend more time at.

Other forms include installing hardware cloth or bird netting to damaged parts that is solid enough that woodpeckers can't peck at there anymore. Filling in vulnerable areas with bird proof cloth forces the woodpecker to seek another area and they can have other repellents to prevent them from moving there. And bad as woodpeckers are, there are some ingredients in repellents and deterrents that cannot be used. Do not use anything that is sticky or greasy to put on the wood where the birds peck on mostly. These type of products risk affected the birds, even in the most difficult of cases, as traditional woodpecker deterrents are not as effective as advertised. Trying to mix it in our form would fail and it is suggested, as a last resort, to reach out to wildlife control and pest control who have experience in handling these birds and insects to prevent any more wooden house damage.

Woodpeckers are classified as wild birds and are protected by state and federal laws. It is illegal for to kill, poison, or shoot woodpeckers without a specific permit. Woodpeckers do have the special benefit of going after infested areas with insects and they should be relocated rather than wiped out. Do not attempt to poison woodpeckers because it is dangerous for us in handling and it could result in the accidental poisoning of other birds and our pets.
