There are many instances where an animal or group of animals have been living inside a person's home and they had no idea of its existence. A rat or mouse can easily find its way into the walls of your home and you may never know it's there.

Even large animals like raccoons and birds can get into your attic and live there completely oblivious to you. This happens because most of us don't really spend any time in our attic, so the animal gets relative isolation and anonymity so it can survive.

While these kinds of animals get into a home, it is more common that you were going to find an animal like a rat and your house. You may be completely unaware of it until you start to smell the decaying corpse of the rodent. What often tells a person that they had an issue with rats is that the animal will die and begin to stink. This may make you wonder how long does it take for a dead rat to start smelling, and then when will that smell actually come to an end?

Like any animal that has died, rats will begin to smell after a certain period of time. This is part of the decomposition process, where bacteria and other organisms begin to eat away at the dead animal, which will release odors into the air.
