Many of New Jersey's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving New Jersey's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We handle every aspect of wildlife control. We are fully equipped to work on any project, large or small. Some of our services include:

  • Humane wildlife trapping and relocation services
  • Removal of raccoons or squirrels from the attic
  • Building repairs and prevention work to keep animals out
  • 100% permanent elimination of rats, mice, or even bats
  • Cleanup of animal waste and odor control services
  • Emergency animal issues, and dead animal removal

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Burlington county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. There is no free Medford animal control for wildlife issues.

Medford Wildlife Removal Tip: Can a Squirrel Have Rabies?

When we think of the illness rabies, we often associate this with dogs. When a dog gets rabies, it becomes absolutely crazed. This is where we get the term "rabid" from, where a dog is just out of its mind from the illness.

While we may most often associate this disease with dogs, that does not mean that other animals cannot contract the disease. Squirrels are one such example. We often think of these animals is nothing more than a nuisance greater, but a squirrel can get rabies.

Let's Talk Some Facts with You

What you should be aware of is that on average 12 percent of all squirrels have rabies. Some scientists believe that number may be as high as 20 percent. Consider that even on the low end, that means that one out of every eight squirrels are likely to have the disease. That's enough for you to be concerned.

Being scratched or bitten by a squirrel means you can easily contract this illness. This is why these animals can be so dangerous.

What Happens with Rabies?

If you do not know much about rabies, it is a grueling illness. The effects of this illness are beyond words, as the person afflicted with it suffers a great deal. The worst part is that if not treated right away, there is no cure for. After about 24 hours a person is left to just suffer until they eventually die.

The most common symptom that people recognize is foaming at the mouth. If you have seen a rabid dog or heard about it, then you are probably aware of this. What you may not know is that this is as a result of the effect that the virus has on a person's brain. The brain is damaged severely by this illness, causing erratic, crazy behavior. Foaming in the mouth is one effect that comes from the craziness.

The person also suffers extreme abdominal cramps and leg pain. The muscles continuously contract throughout the body, making it an excruciating process. It is truly horrific in every way imaginable.

How Can I Tell If a Squirrel Has Rabies?

Knowing this, it is important for you to pay attention to symptoms and signs that will tell you if a squirrel may have rabies. There are two things you should pay especially close attention to: foaming in the mouth and erratic behavior.

Just as any human being, these symptoms tell you that a squirrel is suffering from rabies as well. You will see foaming around the mouth of the squirrel, usually appearing as a white discharge.

Also, squirrels will act quite erratic because of the damage to their brain. Squirrels normally avoid people, but if one is coming at you, it is likely because its natural instincts have been destroyed by the disease. In all seriousness, runaway!

The safe thing to do is to avoid squirrels as much as possible. They may be cute little animals. No denying that. However, that 12 percent chance is too high to put yourself at risk.
