Providence Wildlife Removal Tip: What Are The Squirrel's Mating Habits, When Do They Give Birth And How Do They Raise Their Young?

When it comes to investigating squirrel problems, you will often find that there is a strong correlation between a particular time of year and how often people experience those squirrel issues. Whether it is during the mating season when there can often be conflict among squirrels about which animals get to mate with each other, through to the period that the mother is preparing a nest and getting ready to give birth. By knowing more about the biology and the habits of the squirrels, it is then easier to understand why they can be a problem, and often how best to deal with the problem.

Mating Habits

The mating season will vary depending on the area of the country you are in and how early in the year that spring begins, but the mating season for squirrels will usually be between January and February. Most female squirrels become fertile after they reach a year old, with males maturing later in their lives at between one and two years old, and males make a distinctive noise that is a mixture of purring and cooing during the mating season. Older females will also sometimes be able to have a second litter of baby squirrels in the summer, with this second mating season in June and July.

Birthing Season

At around six weeks, the gestation period is very short, and this means that the birth of baby squirrels in February and March will usually coincide with the arrival of spring. The majority of litters will have between one and four baby squirrels, although it is worth noting that usually only one in four will survive to be a year old. The mother will usually start to wean her young between ten and sixteen weeks, with the squirrels becoming active and starting to leave the nest after twelve weeks.

Raising Baby Squirrels

The mother will often be at her most active during the spring after giving birth as food can sometimes be hard to find, and she will need the extra nutrients to feed her young. One of the most unusual factors is that when a litter is born in the late summer or the fall to an older female squirrel, this litter will usually stay with the mother throughout the winter, before striking out on their own early in the following year.
