Many of South Carolina's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving South Carolina's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We handle every aspect of wildlife control. We are fully equipped to work on any project, large or small. Some of our services include:

  • Humane wildlife trapping and relocaton services
  • Removal of raccoons or squirrels from the attic
  • Building repairs and prevention work to keep animals out
  • 100% permanent elimination of rats, mice, or even bats
  • Cleanup of animal waste and odor control services
  • Emergency animal issues, and dead animal removal

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Greenville county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. Mauldin Wildlife Removal Tip: What Are the Mating Habits, Reproduction of the Squirrel?

If you live in the suburbs or a rural area, you have likely seen lots of squirrels. They are so common, that you may think they come with your house or other property. They are just around this much.

Because you see them so often, you may be wondering what the mating and reproductive habits of the squirrel are. If that is the case, here is the information that should help you to learn more.

When Do Squirrels Mate?

Most squirrels will mate just one time a year. This is not true of the gray squirrel. They actually have two mating periods during the year, with the first occurring in January-February, and the second occurring later in the year, around July and August.

It's Not About the Love

The courtship for the squirrels is not very romantic. The male is only around the female squirrel for a very short period of time during the courtship. In fact, this period of time usually lasts less than a day.

How the mail knows that the female is available is that she will give off a very strong scent. The scent is so strong that the male is able to detect it as much as half a mile away. When she gives off the odor, it will attract many males to her. The one that is the most dominant will be the one who wins the day.

Gestation Period

The gestation period of a squirrel is about 45 days. For the smaller sized squirrel species it can be as short as 35 days. Usually a female has between two and four babies in a letter. Sometimes the letter can be as many as eight.

To have the babies, the squirrel will find an area where it is secluded to protect the babies. This can be a hole in a tree, maybe even your attic. The babies are quite weak at first, born without for and without whiskers. They also are unable to hear nor see. This is why it is important that the mother do all she can to protect them. They could not survive without her providing them with safety.

The babies will remain with the mother for between seven and 10 weeks. At that point, they are able to take care of themselves, becoming a lot more independent. However, it is not uncommon for baby squirrels to stay with the mother for weeks beyond this period of time. What will usually cause them to leave is that the mother will become irritated with them after a certain amount of time, causing them to flee.

The entire mating process from the time that the female squirrel first releases are scent until the babies leave the nest usually lasts as long as 24 weeks. This is the perfect amount of time for the gray squirrel, who would be having another litter of babies shortly after the first group from that year had left. It's no wonder why there are so many around.
