  • Scratching Noises in Your Attic?
  • Unwanted Wildlife on Property?
  • Problem Bird or Bat Infestation?
  • Digging Lawn or Under House?
  • We Can Solve It!
Many of Texas's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving Texas's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Harris county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. There is no free Atascocita animal control for wildlife issues.

Atascocita Wildlife Removal Tip: Do Skunks Run Out of a Spray?

Skunk spray is famous for its vile odor. As a defense mechanism, it works well to keep predators away and skunks safe from harm. After all, who would want to keep going after a skunk after getting a face full of that stink? For the most part, no one. That is, of course, until the skunk cannot spray any more, but what does that mean exactly? Can skunks run out of spray, and, if so, how long would that take? When can you be sure that you are safe when a skunk goes on a full spraying spree?

Skunk Spray

Skunks spray out of a gland right below their tail. This gland secretes that odor and liquid, that skunks can then spray on predators that threaten them. While this gland is not unique to skunks, skunks' use of it is. It can spray you from several feet away, typically up to 10 feet, and will leave a lasting odor that is hard to remove. If it does start spraying, and sprays a few times, how will you know it cannot spray anymore? Believe it or not, there is a limit to how much a skunk can spray, though it does vary from skunk to skunk.

Running Out of Spray

Skunks cannot spray forever. The gland can only produce so much of this liquid at a certain time, and it will run out if the skunk sprays too much. At that point, the skunk will have to rest and let the gland produce some more.

The amount does vary from skunk to skunk. It can take anywhere from two to six sprays for a skunk to run out. There is no way to tell when it has run out, either. The skunk will spray as much as it can for as long as the predator remains. Afterwards, if the skunk has run out of the spray, it will not be able to do it any longer.

Skunks typically take ten days to produce more of the spray. Again, this depends on the skunk, but this means that the skunk will not want to run out any time soon. It is not going to want to spray you, and certainly not spray you as much as it possibly can.

It is rare for a skunk to spray everything it can all in one sitting, but it will if there is a serious threat. Do not try to get the skunk to spray as much as it can because it will if it must. Keep yourself safe and odor free by keeping your distance when skunks are around.
