Ashburn Wildlife Removal Tip: Is It Illegal To Kill A Snake?
"Snakes, why does it have to be snakes?" This is the ultimate fear of Indiana Jones during his global adventures. It is understandable why people hate snakes and will have the impulse to kill them. But, per state, there are different laws regarding their protection, as well an endangered list for certain snakes. Punishments vary for killing a protected snake intentionally unless they threaten life or property. Consider the following when it comes to snake laws.

First, there are the laws regarding snakes as part of hunting. For several states, it is unlawful to capture, kill, possess, sell, or trade snakes for of money value. It is part of a plan to preserve endangered snakes listed in each state's list, as well as a health concern regarding the public handling any poisonous snakes who are not permitted for hunting. For example, in Georgia, it is a misdemeanor to kill a non-game wildlife species such non-venomous snakes. Violation of that law is punishable by $1,000 fine and/orone year in prison.

There is one slight exception to that law and that is if the snake poses a threat to you, another person, or private property. All native snakes are shielded by law with this exception. If proven that they were attacking or causing damage, then killing a legally protected snake would be justifiable. Regarding protected snakes, it is illegal though to hurt or possess any one of them without a permit. In Kentucky, a person cannot have any possession or harm the Copperbelly water snake. In Alabama, there are six specific snakes: black pine, eastern coachwhip, eastern indigo, Florida pine, Gulf salt marsh, and Southern hognose. Penalties for violating these laws include multiple fines and/or imprisonment for one year.

Snakes, however, can be killed also based on a state's gaming laws. Some states say residents must obtain a proper license to hunt, pursue, trap, catch, and kill any species of snakes unless they are specifically banned.In Oklahoma, they do have organized rattlesnake hunting eventsand those participating must have a permit to take part from the scheduled season March 1 to June 30. In Louisiana, residents must have a proper license to collect reptiles from the wild.

But, just because the snakes are there and one can't harm doesn't mean you just let them lie. Multiple states have wildlife agencies where one person can call to collect native snakes. It is highly not recommended to personally remove snakes and drop them into the wild; animal services will handle that properly. State governments work with non-governmental agencies plus private citizens to help save these snakes while also getting rid of the beliefthat's it's okay to kill snakes in sight. Snakes may not be popular around the yard and can be scary (have you seen those videos with enlarged snakes in the gutter), but they are protected wildlife.
