Many of Virginia's wild animals have learned to adapt and even thrive in our homes. For example some wildlife have found that attics make great places to live. Other animals find refuge under homes or porches. Invariably, these animals cause damage. Rodents, like squirrels and rats, love to chew on electrical wires once in an attic, and this causes a serious fire hazard. Raccoons can cause serious contamination in an attic with their droppings and parasites. Same goes for bat or bird colonies. We specialize in solving Virginia's wildlife problems, from snake removal to large jobs like commercial bat control, we do it all.

We handle every aspect of wildlife control. We are fully equipped to work on any project, large or small. Some of our services include:

  • Humane wildlife trapping and relocation services
  • Removal of raccoons or squirrels from the attic
  • Building repairs and prevention work to keep animals out
  • 100% permanent elimination of rats, mice, or even bats
  • Cleanup of animal waste and odor control services
  • Emergency animal issues, and dead animal removal

We do not handle dog or cat problems. If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Fairfax county animal services for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, spay & neuter programs, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, bite reports, deceased pets, lost pets, local animal complaints and to report neglected or abused animals. McLean Wildlife Removal Tip: Difference between Baby rat vs Baby Mouse
To the untutored eye, rats and mice look alike and a baby rat and a baby mouse look even more similar- both are rodents that have an incredible capacity for gnawing through things and making life hell for homeowners. However, understanding the difference helps you to tackle them better.

There are rats and rats and rats- ranging from kangaroo, cotton and Norway rats to black, naked mole rats, wood rats, pack rats and more. The common rats that you normally encounter are the Rattus rattus (black rats). Common mice species range from dormice, field mice to spiny mice and house mice, and the Mus musculus (house mice) are usually the ones that create chaos in homes.

So what's the difference between baby rats and baby mice? Some of the differences are very subtle and it takes a keen eye to detect them.

Generally however, mice are tinier in size and have long thin tails that is covered with hairs. They have smaller but sharper heads than rats, smaller feet too but larger ears. Even a grown mouse is just about 15 cm in length (including the tail). They develop faster than rats, open their eyes only 3 days after they are born. Within a span of two weeks, they are fully haired. Baby rats develop a little more slowly- it takes at least 6 days for them to open their eyes and more than two weeks to develop fur. Mice are brown with darker bellies, whereas rats are grayer in color with white bellies.

Rats appear bulkier, larger and heavier than mice and they are much longer than mice. Their heads are blunt and chunky, unlike the pointed heads of mice. They too have long tails and sometimes the length of its tail can be found to be bigger than a fully grown mouse. Their bodies are covered with fur but unlike miee, they don't have hair around their tails, ears and feet. This probably accounts for their being good swimmers and climbers. Rats have huger front teeth and more powerful jaws than mice.

Mice are curious creatures and like to explore their surroundings to see what they can get- your clothes, toys and even furniture are not safe from them. Essentially night creatures, you can hear them moving about at night, when you're trying to sleep. Rats are not as bold as mice- they are more cautious and hence are harder to trap. Also, rats have longer and curved droppings in contrast to the much shorter droppings of mice.

Mice have a weakness for all types of cereals and carbohydrates and eat less food and drink less water than rats. Ensure that waste food is not left lying around in the kitchen or near the trash cans- these rodents are sure to feast themselves.

However, as rodents go, both of them are pests than no home owner likes having around. Studies show that rats and mice "have the best bite in the rodent world" and can gnaw through just about anything.

Don't let them have their way!
