When it comes to examining the damage that has been caused by pest animals, it is ofter common to see small holes that have been dug around the base of your shed or porch. There are several different species that can cause these types of holes, so it is important to think about the kind of features that can indicate it is indeed an armadillo that is causing the problems. If you do identify the presence of armadillos, it is important to act quickly as these creatures can cause significant problems to the structural stability of domestic properties and outbuildings.

Shallow Holes Dug In The Lawn

This is a tell-tale sign that the problem animal in question is an armadillo, as they are notorious for digging shallow holes below the surface as this is how they find much of their food. With their sense of smell they can identify insects beneath the surface, and will then dig down to eat those animals. Indeed, a single armadillo when given access to a lawn area can leave holes all over the lawn in just a few hours of foraging.

Burrows Beneath Outbuildings Or Property Foundations

While there are several different species that do tend to dig beneath sheds and porches, the armadillo digs in a slightly different way as it tends to dig much closer to the walls of sheds and outbuildings than some other species do. If the pile of earth is directly next to the wall, it may well be an armadillo nest.

The Musky Scent Of An Armadillo Infestation

The scent that an armadillo can produce in close quarters is very distinctive, and if you sense a strong musky scent that is filtering up into the shed, or coming up through the boards of the porch, then this may be a strong sign that you need to investigate the infestation further.

Noises Coming From Sealed Cavities Beneath Your Shed Or Porch

Another of the signs that you may have an armadillo in the cavity beneath your shed or porch is if you start to hear unusual sounds coming from below, particularly if there is a sealed cavity beneath where no noises should be coming from. While not all of these signs will be a guarantee of an armadillo infestation by itself, two or more can be a strong sign that you need to take action.
