How to Get Rid of Birds in a House - Sometimes a bird accidentally flies into a building. It can be stuck in your house. I've also seen many cases of birds inside warehouses, airports, stores, etc. You can either let it fly out on its own, you can shoot it, you can catch it with a mist net, or you can chase it out.

Any bird in a home can be a nuisance, fluttering around in rooftop eves and attics, but some birds are more common offenders than others. Many birds will take the opportunity to nest in a covered area of a porch or in the nook of a roof joint, and most of these moochers are harmless, constructing their nests out of mud and grass, every so often causing a ruckus when feeding time comes around. Non-destructive birds of this nature usually are considered pests because of the droppings left on cars and stoops, and the noise that can accompany the growth of babies into fledglings.

Occasionally, a bird will end up in your house. This will often be just a terrifying for that bird as it will be for you, so remember, one of you must keep calm! If a bird enters your home, whether through an open window or through a crack in your siding, ceiling, or roof, try to corral your house pets into an area that can be blocked off from the bird. Cats love to chase things, and having a feline predator helping you will only make your trapped bird more frantic. Once pets are stashed away, close up any other rooms that you can, forcing the bird into one area of the home. Light is going to be your enemy now. Close off and cover any windows in the containment area except for one. This window should be opened as wide as possible. Turn off any lights so that the interior of the home is as dark as possible. With some time, the bird will fly toward the open window and back out into the wild. If significant time passes and the bird still hasn’t gone out the window, you can try to steer the bird using a large sheet. Hold the sheet in both hands with your arms raised. Herd the bird toward the window without touching it, just as a Border Collie steers cattle through a pasture. Do not hit the bird with a broom, towel, or any other object. Birds are very sensitive to pressure, and a hit that may seem gentle to you may seriously injure the bird. Birds are also very sensitive and can die from stressful situations. Take care to remain calm and patient when dealing with the bird in your house.

If you have tried everything advised and still have a bird in your home, or if the bird is large or predatory, it is time to call a professional. Not only do professionals have the appropriate gear, they also have species-specific knowledge that may aid in the removal of a trapped avian. Remember, the bird in your home does not want to be there any more than you want it to. The desire to escape your home should be strong enough for the bird to require minimal persuasion.

Birds that want to be in your home require a different approach. Some birds, like Chimney Swifts, will deliberately build their homes in your home. Preventing and removing birds of this nature should be handled by a professional. There is no ideal way to trap a wild bird. The best defense is to make you home as unappealing as possible to the species that would be inclined to torment you. Woodpeckers, for instance, may not live in your home, but may live near your home, banging out holes in your siding and support beams. Destructive birds of this capacity are best left to the professionals. An expert trained in bird deterrent architecture can help install or recommend products to make your home inhospitable to birds.
