Just like most other rodents, the flying squirrel is an avid chewer. It will chew through your personal belongings up in the loft to make a small nest, using the chewed up material to make it soft and more comfortable. They’ll also chew through various things to make way too, perhaps for a cozy and hidden little spot, or to make it from one part of the house to another. Rodents are naturally chewy animals, although we're sure they don't actually mean to be half as destructive as they end up being.

There are many risks surrounding rodents chewing, especially through electrical wires. They don't specifically target the wires. They just chew whatever is around them. Chewing is second nature to them. When they do chew through electrical wires, however, it can bring fire hazards. Exposed wires alongside dry wall, filler material in walls, or attic insulation is a recipe for disaster, and that's before we get into how expensive it will be to have the electric circuit in your home or building sorted out because certain lights in certain rooms don't work, and some plug sockets appear to be faulty too. If you’re finding weird electrical problems in your home, chewing critters in the walls or attic could very well be the cause.

Aside from chewing your personal belongings, wires, and even drywall, flying squirrels and other rodents will chew through wood. Your ceiling is made up of intricately and cleverly placed wooden beams, as is a lot of the structure of your building. A little bit of chewing here and there could spell disaster, and long-term animal invasion problems could mean safety problems with your house.
